For anyone running a study's data collection

Most costly research mistakes happen before the first data point.

The Research Data Collection and Management Workbook

Missing consent forms, an instrument licence that lapsed, a database never tested, attrition nobody tracked. This workbook is an operational field companion: practical templates, checklists and SOPs from pre-launch readiness to a clean dataset handed to analysis.

  • A go/no-go readiness checklist before you enter the field
  • Participant tracking with recruitment dashboards and CONSORT/STROBE flow
  • Data quality controls, a codebook and a data management plan

“This workbook is one of the more genuinely practical research guides I have seen in years. Rather than rehashing research methods theory, it assumes you already have a protocol and moves directly into the unglamorous but critical work of making data collection actually run without falling apart.”

“What stands out most is the focus on preparation. The workbook shows how small mistakes early on can ruin a study. For example, it includes a “go or no-go” checklist to confirm approvals, tools, and systems before collecting any data.”

“I love this book explicitely states common mistakes in every chapter and some of which I recognize too when I was a student and some that my peers had gone through.”

Sound familiar?

Where data collection goes wrong

“I found missing consent forms three months in.”
“Every research assistant administers the instrument a little differently.”
“Participants are dropping out and I have no tracking system.”
“Nobody built a codebook, and now the analyst is guessing what each variable means.”

These are not rare disasters. They are what happens when a study enters the field without operational infrastructure. Verification, standard procedures and tracking, set up before the first participant, prevent almost all of them.

How it works

Prepare. Run. Hand off.

From pre-launch readiness to a locked, analysis-ready dataset.

Step 1

Prepare

Readiness checklist, operations manual, SOPs and research assistant training.

Step 2

Run it cleanly

Recruitment and attrition tracking, data entry checks, missing data and multi-site coordination.

Step 3

Hand off

Codebook, file organisation, version control, a data management plan and a locked dataset.

What you will have

What you will have

  • A go/no-go checklist covering ethics, instruments, databases and training
  • An operations manual with numbered SOPs and protocol fidelity monitoring
  • Recruitment dashboards, attrition trackers and a CONSORT/STROBE flow diagram
  • REDCap and Qualtrics setup plans with branching logic and testing sign-off
  • Double-entry checks, range rules and missing data classified as MCAR, MAR or MNAR
  • Multi-site communication logs and site performance dashboards
  • A codebook, version-control audit trail, data management plan and locked dataset

Is it for you?

Built for the field

It is for you if

  • You are collecting dissertation or thesis data
  • You coordinate a clinical study or manage a multi-site project
  • You run a research team that needs standard procedures and quality control

It is not

  • A research design or statistics book
  • Specific to one software. It covers REDCap, Qualtrics and paper.
  • A substitute for your ethics board's or sponsor's own requirements

Questions

Before you buy

My study is qualitative.

There are field notes, observation, recording and transcription quality templates, alongside the general readiness and data management tools.

Do I need REDCap?

No. There are planners for REDCap and Qualtrics, and the tracking and quality templates work with any system, including paper.

Does it cover data protection?

Yes: a de-identification and anonymisation worksheet, a data security incident response template and a data use agreement checklist.

What about cleaning the data afterwards?

The final chapter covers pre-analysis cleaning and outliers, with a cleaning checklist and an outlier decision log. Both are in the Research Data Collection & Management Kit too.

Protect every data point you collect

Verify before you start, track as you go, and hand off a clean dataset.
